Postdoctoral Research Associate: Phosphorus Transport in Agricultural Systems

DESCRIPTION: The Nutrient Management and Water Quality group (http://go.umd.edu/Toor) housed in the Department of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Maryland seeks candidates for a three-year postdoctoral researcher position on the fate and transport of phosphorus (P) in agricultural landscapes. This position is funded through the USDA-NIFA and Maryland Department of Agriculture grants. The initial appointment will be for one year, with the possibility of an extension based on performance.
POSITION SUMMARY: The successful candidate will lead a project investigating the cycling and transport of P in crop production systems, with the overall goal of developing the next generation of P-risk assessment tool in Maryland. Specific duties of this position will include investigating P losses via surface and sub-surface transport pathways from 15 edge-of-the-field on-farm catchments located across the state. All catchments are instrumented with water control structures, H-flumes, ISCO auto-samplers, flow meters, and rain gauges (suction cup lysimeters and soil moisture sensors will be added shortly). The candidate will collect and analyze water, soil, and sediment samples from field sites for various chemical and isotope analyses. Two catchments are also instrumented with real-time insitu UV-Vis sensors that measure nutrient concentrations at minutes intervals. Potential exists for exploring the use of oxygen isotope of phosphate (δ18Op) in soil-water, runoff, and leaching. The selected candidate will work with a team comprising a research scientist, a lab technician, and graduate and undergraduate students.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATION: A Ph.D. in hydrology, soil and water science, modeling, biogeochemistry, ecohydrology, engineering (agricultural, ecological, or environmental), water quality, or a related field with an emphasis on investigating the fate and transport of nutrients, preferably P in agricultural landscapes/watersheds. This is a high-visibility position in the state that will require at least 2 days per week of travel to field sites and liaison with the farmers, stakeholders, and state and federal agencies in the region. The candidate must possess a valid US driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATION/SKILLS: Experience with collection and analysis of hydrologic data; Knowledge of P transport models or P site indices; capabilities in hydrologic or reactive transport modeling; experience with field water quality measurement techniques; knowledge of management practices for reducing loss of agricultural P to surface waters; training and interest in scientific field equipment and instruments; ability to work independently and as part of a team; excellent communication and interpersonal skills for working with diverse stakeholders; strong statistical skills and demonstrated proficiency with R or another statistical program; familiarity with spatial analysis with ArcGIS; and a strong publication record.
