Transportation Services at Iowa State University is seeking qualified applications for its Director of Transportation Services. This position is responsible for planning, directing, and managing the daily business operations of a 650+-vehicle fleet with a $4M self-funded operating budget while providing exceptional customer service. The rental fleet includes daily rentals as well as seasonal and annual leases, including management of the fleets for Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School, Iowa School for the Deaf, and the Iowa Board of Regents.Â Iowa State University is seeking strong, forward-thinking candidates who will build on the success of its existing operation while providing safe, economical transportation for the business travel needs of ISUâs faculty, staff, and approved student organizations.
This position will initiate the purchase and sale of fleet vehicles as well as develop and administer University fleet policies in accordance with Iowa Board of Regents and State of Iowa policies/guidelines/regulations. The position is responsible for the business planning and fiscal management of the operation, including developing and implementing operational budgets and setting rates to sustain a self-funded operation while keeping rates competitive for its customers.Â The position requires strong leadership skills and will manage a small team of employees dedicated to serving the needs of the department and the university.

â¢ Identifies and recommends short- and long-term business strategies.
â¢ Prepares, implements, manages, and monitors the annual budget for the unit/department in order to control expenses, maintain service, and meet departmental goals; provides projections and recommendations for unit success.
â¢ Develops and implements vehicle maintenance, replacement, and disposal guidelines.
â¢ Analyzes organizational data to recommend solutions to new and complex problems, develops innovative strategies, and quantifies the competitive performance of the organization's operations and/or markets; models and evaluates the potential impact of changes.
â¢ Adapts departmental plans and priorities to address resource and operational challenges and opportunities.
â¢ Guides decision-making and problem-solving activities pursuant to university policies, procedures, and business plan; receives guidance from senior leadership as necessary.
â¢ Manages the vanpools, including determining areas with sufficient interest to support a vanpool.
â¢ Oversees accident reports and ensures all accident reports are completed.
â¢ Maintains relationships with suppliers; reviews materials sourced, costs, and supplier services; recommends changes in purchasing procedures to improve service, quality, and/or reduce cost.
â¢ Manages professional employees and/or supervisors or supervises large, complex support, production or operations team(s).
â¢ Interviews, hires, supervises, and evaluates staff, initiates disciplinary process, and resolves employee complaints and grievances.
