The Campus Transportation Engineer is responsible for comprehensive planning and design of mobility infrastructure across the University; advises University leadership on long-range planning and technical solutions related to transportation, transportation operation, and maintenance. Working under the Director of Planning, the Campus Transportation Engineer articulates transportation planning objectives to shape the built environment, improve safety for all modes of travel, enhance the legibility and navigability of the transportation network, and to foster more sustainable and equitable travel choices.

The work pertains to both long-range and short-range development plans; assists in operating the campus transportation network which includes oversight for all campus signal plans, road and lane closure timing and permits, approves detour plans for campus; manages maintenance program for transportation network; coordinates with campus partners to prioritize and scope capital projects in relation to all transportation infrastructure; works closely with the operational units and transportation demand management programs at the Davis and Sacramento campuses to reach our sustainability goals; partners with the Office of Government and Community Relations to engage local and regional governments as well as transit agency partners.

The Transportation Engineer position will work with project teams, city traffic engineering and other stakeholders to coordinate accommodations for projects and maintaining access to campus. The Transportation Engineer will also work closely with the GIS team to ensure current and future projects are coordinated and tracked to reduce overlapping conflicts where possible. Collaborate on campus roadway pavement markings and traffic signage.

Additional Minimum License/Certification         

  • Current professional engineering license in the state of California

Minimum Education/Experience                 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related engineering discipline and more than five (5) years of related experience with considerable experience in traffic engineering/operations and transportation planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with traffic and parking counting methodologies and technologies.
  • Experience coordinating with stakeholder groups including on-campus, local, state, and federal agencies.

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Thorough knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian planning, including knowledge of laws and policies related to bicycling and pedestrian issues.
  • Strong skills in analyzing, researching and synthesizing large amounts of data for preparing sound and relevant proposals and analyses. Ability to plan, organize, and coordinate research surveys and field surveys. Skill in conducting research, gathering data, performing data analysis on sets of data, and developing reports. This includes constructing tables, charts and graphs from compiled data

Additional Preferred License/Certification         

  • Current professional Transportation engineering license in the state of California

Preferred Education/Experience             

  • Eight to twelve (8-12) years of related experience with considerable experience in traffic engineering/operations and transportation planning; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a Higher Education or Medical Center business environment

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA)

  • Knowledge of highway laws, codes, standards and specifications pertaining to highway engineering and costs.
  • Knowledge of principles, materials, methods and techniques used in the design, construction and maintenance of highways, bridges and related structures
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with peers, staff, faculty, the public, outside agencies and other higher education institutions.
  • Expert computer skills to use a variety of software programs including spreadsheet, database, accounting, word processing and mail delivery programs in an electronic environment.
