Transportation Demand Management and Safety Coordinator

Position Summary:
This position provides an opportunity to be part of a team of transportation professionals dedicated to providing sustainable Transportation Demand Management (TDM) and safety programs with a strong focus on reducing single occupancy vehicles driving to campus in support of Cornell's Carbon Neutrality Commitment of 2035. Transportation safety programs, relating to pedestrian and other active transportation modes, are of great importance in supporting and encouraging alternative uses to travel.
This position provides autonomy with availability of management when needed. The schedule is variable, providing ample time for outreach and community collaborations. Under the general direction of the Assistant Director, the role coordinates the University's programs to reduce single occupancy vehicles driving to campus. Oversees all aspects of TDM programs at Cornell by collecting data to evaluate transportation usage, promoting alternative transportation options, and working with community leaders to communicate effects of transportation issues in the surrounding areas. Oversees all aspects of transportation safety programs as relates to pedestrian and other active transportation modes, including identifying areas of concern, conducting safety audits, and implementing industry best practices. Plays a key role in the development and implementation of TDM and transportation safety initiatives. Leads initiatives associated with multimodal transportation needs of the campus community.
Develops, implements, and oversees TDM programs that increase the use of alternative transportation methods. Develops, implements, and oversees transportation safety programs in collaboration with CUPD and other campus stakeholders to improve transportation safety through the creation and implementation of safety education programs aimed at the campus community. Develops and implements methods to evaluate proposed and current TDM program components. Performs feasibility studies by modeling and forecasting a variety of transportation alternatives and issues.
Communicates and promotes alternative transportation initiatives to students and the community. Assists in communicating objectives, proposes policy changes, and develops plans and programs that minimize traffic flow and parking demand in and around the campus.
Works with staff, students, consultants, shared governance, and the community to ensure TDM goals are aligned with transportation and safety needs. This includes working with various community agencies and groups on alternative transportation options. Interacts frequently with other college departments and private contractors.
Participates in campus meetings to present planning proposals, gathers feedback from those affected by projects, and reviews overall project designs. Reviews campus construction plans and planning initiatives to ensure that all transportation modes are included and that designs follow industry best practices.
Works with the Assistant Director to develop the program budget.
Leads student workers and volunteers in programs that promote TDM and safety programs and incentives.
Required Qualifications:
- Experience in and/or demonstrated commitment to supporting diversity, equity, access, inclusion, and wellbeing.
- Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
- An associate degree and 2 to 4 years of relevant experience or equivalent combination.
- Ability to adapt, combine, or make improvements to services, products, processes, and programs. Work requires reasoning skills and judgment. Ability to assist in and influence decisions concerning policy-setting. Ability to provide accurate information using a variety of communication modes.
- Excellent graphic, organizational, writing, and analytical skills are necessary, as well as the ability to create and make presentations to a wide variety of audiences and the public. Ability to work well in a team environment, flexibility, and capability to adapt to changing priorities and schedules is essential. Must demonstrate the organizational values of truth, respect, teamwork, integrity, and excellence.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A master's degree in planning or related field, or a bachelor's degree in planning or related field plus 2 or more years working in a similar position.
