The George Mason University, Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS) within the College of Science invites highly qualified candidates to apply for our Transportation Geography faculty position at the rank of Assistant/Associate Professor. This full-time, tenure-track position is scheduled to begin in August 2022. About Geography & Geoinformation Science (GGS):
 
The department offers cutting-edge research and education in geography, remote sensing, geoinformatics, and geointelligence. We are known for our Geoinformatics research and education, especially on the computing and quantitative aspects. Located in the Washington DC metropolitan area, the department has strong links with federal agencies and industry, which provides dynamic research opportunities and attracts high quality graduate students. Responsibilities:

We are seeking candidates with strong foundations in transportation geography analysis and novel modeling techniques, such as mobility, accessibility, spatial interaction, the dynamics of supply chains, transportation infrastructure, and the influences of new technology (such as connected/autonomous vehicles). Outstanding candidates will demonstrate high-level research using network analysis, simulation, transportation GIS, demand and allocation modeling, and/or economic analyses.
 
The selected candidate will develop an externally funded research portfolio that will advance the mission of GGS, advise and support a diverse population of graduate students at both the master's and Ph.D. levels, provide core support to our successful and growing programs in Geography and Geoinformation Science, teach core and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (with an expected 2/2 teaching load after an initial period) and develop new courses as needed.
 
Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in geography, geoinformatics, urban planning, or a closely related field is required by time of appointment;
  • A clearly articulated research agenda rooted in transportation geography analysis and modeling;
  • A proven and active record of publishing peer-reviewed scholarship.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
   
  • A promising record of excellence in mentoring and teaching, including introductory, upper-division, and graduate contexts;
  • Demonstrated history and/or potential of seeking/securing external research grants;
  • Experience in, or the potential for, building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment in teaching, mentoring, research, life experiences, or service.
