Position description
Founded in 2000, UC Berkeley Safe Transportation Research and Education Center (SafeTREC) is affiliated with Berkeley Public Health and the Institute of Transportation Studies, with additional collaboration with the Department of City and Regional Planning, Public Policy, and Transportation Engineering. Our work is carried out by faculty, post-doctoral scholars, research staff, and graduate student researchers.
Contribute to functional research projects in partnership with the California Department of Transportation. This will include:
- Lead the development and management of a tool that applies safety performance functions (SPFs) using crash data along the California state highway system. Responsibilities will include: (i) enhance the functionality of a newly developed spreadsheet-based MS Excel Macro tool that will be used for conducting SPF-based analyses and for calibrating existing SPFs; (ii) incorporate SPF equations into the MS Excel Macro Spreadsheet so it can be used by select Caltrans expert users; and (iii) provide guidelines for developing additional SPFs, re-calibrating existing SPFs, and a road-map for incorporating such SPFs into the tool.
- Collaborate on research to support pedestrian and bicyclist safety monitoring projects. Responsibilities will include: (i) develop an approach to incorporating risk into existing methods of identification or prioritization of spots, corridors, and systemic hotspots using pedestrian and bicyclist exposure estimates; (ii) build on existing work to develop an approach to incorporating equity considerations into the identification or prioritization of spots, corridors, and systemic hotspots; and (iii) support and enhance existing spreadsheet-based MS Excel Macro tools for pedestrian and bicyclist safety monitoring.
- Collaborate on research to develop an enhanced approach for systemic safety improvements.
- Disseminate research results through presentations and publications; mentor graduate and undergraduate students

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)
PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD (or equivalent international degree) program.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
- Ph.D. or equivalent international degree
- No more than 3 years of post-degree research experience by start date.
- PhD or equivalent in civil engineering, public health, city planning, or related field.
- Strong quantitative and statistical skills.
- Knowledge of concepts related to traffic safety monitoring.
- Familiarity with active transportation (pedestrian and bicycle) modes and safety.
- Strong coding skills in VBA, R, and/or Python.
